Digital Catapult Brighton
Designing future business with lean startup
During its second year, Richard Scott, Innovation Manager at the Digital Catapult Centre Brighton wanted to increase the potential success rate for startups involved in the programme by providing them with more support around validating their ideas and designed both user centred products and businesses from day one.
The challenges of innovation
Digital Catapult Centres are focussed on innovation and economic growth in new creative industries. The team's expertise are in developing innovation cultures, providing business mentoring and access to new technology platforms like Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and connected services through their dedicated 5G testbed.
Based on the feedback from the previous year’s cohort, they wanted to expand their capability to support the businesses design and development of innovative digital products and services.
Richard spoke to us about the idea of a UX Clinic, where the residents could come with their challenges and have a person they could go to for help with digital design.
I have had phenomenal feedback from the companies Andy has worked with, who have described his advice and support as transformative to their business, catapulting their business and product development forward.Richard Scott, Innovation Manager
For the duration of the 2016/17 residency, we provided Digital Catapult Brighton residents User Experience coaching, taking their technologies and ideas and moving them into viable products and services using lean startup methods and User Centred Design principles.
Andy’s ability to provide clear and straightforward suggestions to companies regardless of the technical complexity they are operating within is impressive. His knowledge of design thinking and user research is extensive, yet his common sense approach cuts through any jargon and theory.Richard Scott, Innovation Manager
Cross-business collaboration workshops
We ran workshops with business to teach founders valuable skills that ensure success such as how to create a Business Model Canvas, use Value Proposition Statements to set direction and Agile, iterative developments to create tests and validate Product Market Fit for their product through user testing.
School ended, what happened next?
Our work through Digital Catapult Brighton has resulted in a number of the resident startups working with us on a long term basis to further their skills and validate their products through lean startup practices.
We now work with a number of business founders through 1-2-1 UX coaching and mentorship, continuing their growth of meaningful business with purpose.
During the summer of 2017 we were invited to participate in a symposium for businesses in healthcare held a the Digital Catapult London HQ. We got to speak to leaders in artificial intelligence and big data based startups about the challenges that AI faces and how the healthcare industry needs to allow SMEs in for innovation to happen.
